Private Instruction

Learning how to operate a boat from an instructor is crucial for anyone who plans on spending time on the water. Not only does it ensure safety, but it also allows for a more enjoyable experience. An instructor can teach you the proper techniques for maneuvering the boat, navigating through different water conditions, and responding to emergencies. Additionally, they can help you become familiar with the different parts of the boat and how they work, as well as provide guidance on the rules and regulations of boating. By taking lessons from an experienced instructor, you can gain the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently operate a boat on your own and have a fulfilling and safe time on the water.

Moreover, an instructor can provide personalized feedback and adjust to your learning pace, making sure that you understand each topic before moving on to the next. This personalized approach can help you develop good boating habits from the start and avoid developing bad habits that could lead to accidents or costly mistakes.

In addition to the practical benefits of learning from an instructor, taking a course can also be a great opportunity to meet other boaters and share experiences and knowledge. Many boating schools offer group classes or events where boaters can connect and discuss their passion for boating.

Overall, learning from an instructor is a valuable investment for anyone who wants to enjoy boating safely and confidently. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced boater, taking a course can help you enhance your skills and knowledge, and ultimately, have a more enjoyable time on the water.

Furthermore, learning from an instructor can also help you stay up-to-date with the latest safety measures and technologies in boating. The instructor can teach you about the different types of safety equipment you should have on board, such as life jackets, flares, and fire extinguishers. They can also show you how to use navigational tools like GPS systems, sonar devices, and radar systems to help you navigate more effectively and avoid hazards.

Another benefit of learning from an instructor is that they can teach you about the various types of boats available, and help you choose the one that is right for your needs. They can also provide guidance on maintenance and upkeep, so you can keep your boat in good condition and avoid costly repairs.

In summary, learning how to operate a boat from an instructor is essential for anyone who wants to enjoy the water safely and confidently. It provides practical knowledge, personalized feedback, and an opportunity to meet other boaters and share experiences and knowledge. So, whether you are a beginner or an experienced boater, consider taking a course from an experienced instructor to enhance your skills and knowledge and have a more enjoyable time on the water.

Thank you Rhys for helping us bring our new boat home. You gave us valuable lessons learned, a safe passage, and you helped build our confidence when we needed it most.
Rhys was professional, all the way from planning through execution.
We can recommend Rhys for learning and delivery. Not only did we get our new-to-us boat safely home, he was patient with us and talked us through all aspects as we were navigating with him and learning the trades and tricks, the Do’s and Don’ts.
Rhys is not afraid to call out the good and the bad. We appreciated this as we’re eagerly learning and wanting to know how to approach even the most difficult situations.
We can highly recommend Griffin Bay Adventures for delivery and teaching. We got both!

I did a weekend course for the American Sailing Association 103 certification with Captain Rhys Balmer. We left from Friday Harbor, sailed through the beautiful San Juans to Orcas Island, and spent one night on the boat. I cannot recommend Griffin Bay Adventures highly enough. The boat was beautiful and well-maintained, and I learned even more than I expected. Most importantly, Rhys is a true teacher, not just someone that shows you how to sail. He did an excellent job inspiring confidence in us as crew to challenge ourselves and learn. Going forward, Griffin Bay will be my first choice for sailing.

I joined Rhys on a delivery of a 40’ motor yacht from Gig Harbor WA to Hayden Island OR. We sailed in low visibility, through choppy waters in the straits with breeze over 20 knots, offshore overnight to avoid crab pots and up the Columbia river for a hundred miles for a total of five days. Rhys always put the safety of the boat and crew first, he was well prepared with the plan and provisions and was very generous in sharing his experience. When we delivered the boat he had a list of items that needed addressing on the boat for the new owners. I learned a great deal from him during this trip and would highly recommend him both as a delivery captain and as an instructor. A+

Rhys helped me get acquainted with a new-to-me 30’ sailboat and filled me in on basic principles of charting a multi-day course. I was initially thinking I was in a bit over my head with this sailboat and having to take it from Friday Harbor to its new home in Seattle asap. After a few hours with Rhys, I definitely felt like I could handle it. He went over about everything on the boat with me and made sure I could sail and motor it. He is very kind, friendly, thorough, and easy to learn from.
