ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising

  • Griffin Bay Adventures 204 Front Street Friday Harbor, WA, 98250 United States (map)

Join us aboard Elsewhere, our Soverel 33 and veteran of the R2AK. This class is the second in ASA's series and focuses on refining the skills introduced in 101, but on a larger boat. In addition to reviewing previous material, this course introduces new levels of complexity such as sail shape and anchoring. It serves as the final class before 104 or Bareboat cruising certification. Elsewhere is the perfect boat for this class due to its performance-oriented design. Its sail plan and rig design allow students to observe firsthand the effects of mast bend. It also features adjustable jib fairleads, which demonstrate the effects of sail twist under load. With a 50-foot mast and a lightweight design, Elsewhere can sail in a wider range of wind speeds than most boats. Its complement of sails allows for engaging instruction in winds as low as five knots. Aside from its reputation as a light air performer, Elsewhere proved her strength during the 2022 R2AK, heading north on the outside of Vancouver Island to Ketchikan Alaska. Additionally, her cockpit layout enables the instructor to stand behind the helmsman for a clear view of all crew and allows easy course correction. Contact us soon, as there is a chance that this class will fill up quickly. Please note that we typically offer advanced classes and yacht deliveries during the high season, rather than foundation classes like this one. There are many advantages to signing up with GBA. For example, our captains deliver boats year-round in various latitudes, and our alumni receive priority for exciting opportunities to gain ocean experience on a range of older and brand-new boats. The instructor for this class is Capt Rhys Balmer, who has been teaching for over 20 years. "This is one of my favorite classes to teach because the students have already been introduced to sailing in 101 and often have their own sea stories. They come with great questions, and it's rewarding to see the 'aha' moments. These days, I usually teach 106 or provide advanced private instruction, so the enthusiasm from these new sailors is refreshing, and their excitement is contagious."
